I’ve been to a number of events with School of the Wild and think it’s great. There’s a winning combination of teachers/guides who are passionate about their field, together with the chance to explore and discover things for yourself. I particularly enjoyed the morning we spent up on the Downs with a herbalist who showed us a range of summer herbs and flowers, which I’d walked past many times and never really noticed. That day we ended up around a camp fire learning how to make a salve from one of the herbs.

On other occasions we’ve had the opportunity to learn new skills such as using a bow drill to make fire. Actually, although I made my own bow drill, I didn’t manage to make fire, but it’s spurred me on to have another go. I was more successful with the same guide, foraging for and then enjoying a feast of food from the local area. This included ground-elder wrapped fish and nettle pesto. And yes, we ended up around another camp fire. There seems to be a theme emerging here.

We’ve also had some days where we’ve focussed on exploring senses to experience the natural world: for example, learning ancient skills of fox-walking and using peripheral vision and developing powers of perception and observation that can by-pass our twenty-first century reliance on cognitive powers. Or there was one morning where we spent time in a ‘sit-spot’ just quietly noticing what was happening around us.

I’m looking forward to future events. We’ve already spent a day with horses finding out more about their behaviour patterns and responses, which has helped me feel more confident around them. On the horizon are more opportunities for learning more about trees and plants as well as, of course, more chances to sit around a camp fire with some really great people.
